Staging Macbeth

Write your thoughts about at least 2 of the selections above. Which production did you feel was most effective, and why? Which bothered you, or didn't seem quite as effective and why? If YOU were in charge of a film production of Macbeth, what techniques would you use? How might you make it appeal to modern audiences (with the rule being you can't change the dialogue).

In class, we saw different videos portraying the opening scene of Macbeth. The opening scene was the witches. Each video had a different setting for the scene, with some using modern twists. The film that was the most effective to me was the one directed where the witches were dressed up as nurses in the hospital. It had a creative modern twist, while they also embodied the evilness of the witches. Everything they said was clear and wasn’t missing any key lines. The scene that was my least favorite was the animation of Macbeth. The drawings were good, however a lot of the lines were cut out. It was a good effort, but they need to add key lines if they want to hook the audience.

If I were to direct Macbeth, I would make the setting more modern. I would want the film to be directed in Scotland, but a modern version of Scotland. I feel that if the setting is more modern, it would be easier to connect with the audience. In bloody scenes, I would use fake but realistic blood to represent the violence and murder. I would also use the weather a lot to foreshadow upcoming events.
